COHERENCE, DIVERSITY AND EVOLUTION OF CAPITALISMS: The Institutional Complementarity Hypothesis

چکیده

What are the forces that make relatively and transitorily coherent the institutional configurations of capitalism? In response to the literature on the variety of capitalisms, the article investigates the relative explanatory power of various hypotheses: institutional complementarity, institutional hierarchy, coevolution, simple compatibility or isomorphism. Compatibility is too often confused with complementarity and complementarity is frequently an ex post recognition, rarely an ex ante design. Both hybridization and endometabolism are the driving forces in the transformation of institutional configurations. Uncertainty and the existence of some slack in the coupling of various institutions are key features that call for the mixing of various methodologies in order to detect complementarities. This framework is then used in order to analyse the degree of transformation of German industrial relations under the pressure of shareholder value. A second case study shows that three distinct institutional complementarities are at the origin of the more successful national economies since the 90s. Thus institutional diversity is being recreated and the existence of complementarities play a role in this process.

Institutional complementarity and diversity of social systems of innovation and production

This article proposes an institutional analysis of modern capitalist economies. It argues that the institutional dimension is crucial if one wants to account for the coexistence of different types of modern developed economies, characterised by substantially different institutional structures. It explains why no generalised pattern of convergence towards the same economic model should be expect...

Firm Performance and Institutional Context: a Theoretical Exploration with Evidence from the Italian Cooperative Sector

This thesis examines the relationship between institutional context and firm performance, from both a theoretical and empirical perspective. The aim is to engage with the debate seeking to explain the observed diversity in the forms of economic organisation prevailing in socio-economic systems. The focus of the empirical work is on investigating the effects of the structure and behaviour of ban...

Positive darwinian selection observed at the variable-region genes of immunoglobulins.

To examine Gojobori and Nei's hypothesis that the immunoglobulin heavy-chain variable-region (VH) genes in mammals are subject to diversity-enhancing selection, we studied the rates of synonymous and nonsynonymous nucleotide substitution in the complementarity-determining regions (CDRs) and in the framework regions (FRs) of mouse and human VH genes. The results obtained indicate that the non-sy...

Tree species diversity promotes aboveground carbon storage through functional diversity and functional dominance

The relationship between biodiversity and ecosystem function has increasingly been debated as the cornerstone of the processes behind ecosystem services delivery. Experimental and natural field-based studies have come up with nonconsistent patterns of biodiversity-ecosystem function, supporting either niche complementarity or selection effects hypothesis. Here, we used aboveground carbon (AGC) ...
